What Is TAP® Insulation?

TAP® Insulation is a popular cellulose insulation with a borate mineral coating, offering an innovative solution for permanently reducing pests in your home. Extremely effective at both insulation and pest control, it’s an EPA-registered pesticide that matches or exceeds conventional insulation in major performance categories, based on comparisons of R-Value (thermal resistance) and STC Value (acoustical resistance).

Why is it called “TAP® Insulation”?

T-A-P is an acronym that makes it easy to remember how it’s improving comfort in your home:

What is TAP Insulation? Close up, we can see it’s cellulose-based insulation with borate pest control treatment

Thermal

Keeps it warm in the winter and cool in the summer. Once fully insulated, homeowners can save up to 30% on their energy bills.

Acoustical

Shuts out outdoor noises, prevents indoor noises from carrying

Pest Control

Stops pests in their tracks, including over a dozen of the most common household pests in our region.

How Does TAP® Insulation Work?

When an insect comes in contact with TAP® Pest Control Insulation, borate particles attach to it. Then, after the “self-grooming” household insect begins cleaning itself, it ingests the particles. The borate works to kill the insect by disrupting the insect’s digestive process, causing it to starve to death.

Is TAP® Insulation Safe?

Yes, TAP® Insulation is made up of cellulose-based insulation and borates, which are both safe. Borates are mineral salts mined from the earth with applications in many consumer products like contact lens solution and antifungal cream. The risk to people and pets is minimal. Borates are deadly to insects but their toxicity to mammals is extremely low.

In other words, like any other insulation product, you’ll want to keep handling to a minimum. If you have to, wash your hands with soap and water immediately afterward. Never ingest borates and keep away from children.

TAP® Insulation can last up to 100 years. Installed correctly and kept dry, you won’t need to replace it. This insulation delivers consistent performance throughout your home for decades.

Throughout its lifetime, TAP® remains effective against pests. Pests never develop a tolerance, and the protective layer never diminishes. Working silently within your walls, TAP® shields your family from 21 of the most common household pests. That’s why we confidently describe it as a “permanent” layer of pest protection.

Yes, TAP® insulation comes with a manufacturer’s limited lifetime warranty. This warranty protects the original purchaser and is specific to the property owner – it does not transfer if the property changes hands.

How Does TAP® Insulation Regulate Temperature?

To understand how TAP® Insulation works, you need to understand how thermal exchange works. If you have two adjacent environments with different temperatures, such as the interior and exterior of a house, heat will naturally try to move from the warmer environment (the house) to the cooler one (outside) until equilibrium is achieved (the interior of the house is as cold as it is outside).

Heat flows through conduction and convection. The difference is that conduction is when heat travels through a hard surface, whereas convection is when heat transfers through a fluid like air or water. Heat travels much more efficiently through conduction than convection. This can be easily illustrated by putting a pan on the stove: the pan will quickly become very hot, while the air temperature around the stove will remain mostly the same.

TAP®Insulation slows the transfer of heat by making the process less conductive. As a cellulose insulation, TAP® Pest Control Insulation is produced by grinding up old newspapers into tiny pieces. The cellulose fibers connect on a molecular level, creating microscopic air pockets within the insulation. Thousands or even millions of tiny air pockets work together to trap heat within an area so it’s much more difficult to escape. These air pockets are key to the superior performance of TAP® Pest Control Insulation.

We have used Lookout Pest Control for over 15 years now for our pest services. Recently we found out that they also perform encapsulation of crawl spaces. How Does TAP® Compare to Other Types of Insulation?

These same principles explain how all types of insulation work, not just TAP®. But TAP® does it better due to its cellulose composition, which is naturally suited for insulation.

Since cellulose is denser, it has a better R-Value and STC Value, which means it’s better at slowing the flow of air as well as heat. This is especially important during the coldest times of the year when the flow of air from your home is the strongest and when you also need your insulation to work the best.

What is R-Value?

Okay, now it’s time to get technical. R-Value stands for Resistance Value, which is a metric used to rate the effectiveness of the insulation in your home. The greater the R-value, the better the general performance of the insulation. Different types of insulation have different R-Values per inch, and the more you add, the greater your total R-Value will be.

As you can see, TAP® Pest Control Insulation is a superior insulation product with an excellent R-value at 3.6 per inch.

Insulation type R-Value per inch
Fiberglass (loose-fill)
2.2
Fiberglass (batts)
2.9
Cellulose (TAP® Insulation)
3.6

How Does TAP® Prevent Sound Infiltration?

Acoustic exchange works in much the same way as thermal exchange. Just like it is easier for heat to flow through solid materials, it is also easier for sound to flow through solid materials, and the small air pockets created by the interconnection of the paper fibers in TAP® Insulation reduce the amount of sound transmitted from fiber to fiber.

What Is STC Value?

Similar to R-Value, there’s a specific measurement used to measure the sound-dampening abilities of insulation. It’s called STC, or Sound Transmission Class. While it roughly correlates to R-Value in some ways, it’s not the same thing.

Essentially, an STC of 30 is comparable to a drywood wall without insulation – it’s easy to hear what’s going on in another room. Whereas a room with an R-Value of 60 would have an STC of ~50. This would mean that outdoor noises such as airplanes, lawnmowers, and street traffic are mostly eliminated. And interior noises like appliances or flushing toilets are kept to a minimum.

STC Rating Description
20
Like a glass window or sliding door – no insulation.
30
Like a wall inside your house with no insulation – outdoor noises can still be mostly heard.
40
A wall in your house with some insulation – sounds will be dampened from room to room.
50
Fully insulated – loud voices cannot be heard from room to room and outdoor noises are suppressed.

How do you know you need new insulation?

Did you know that an estimated 89% of homes in the U.S. are under-insulated? Here are some of the main signs you should consider installing or replacing insulation:

  • Trouble regulating temperatures: When a cold snap or a heatwave arrives, does it suddenly feel uncomfortable inside? If so, it may be a sign that even though your HVAC is trying, your insulation can’t keep up with the shifts.
  • Expensive energy bill: Heating and cooling is expensive. While it can be difficult to establish a baseline of how much it should cost to heat or cool your home, if it seems way too high, it may be a sign your home is under-insulated and it’s worth digging deeper.
  • Damaged insulation: Insulation can become damaged due to several factors such as flooding, or wildlife or rodents getting inside. If it becomes damaged, we recommend replacing it as soon as possible.
  • Noise pollution: A properly insulated home creates a quiet sanctuary, blocking out street traffic and other neighborhood noise.

How Do You Know the Right Amount of Attic Insulation for Your Home?

This is a good question – and the answer depends on where you live in the country. Here in the Southeast, due to our relatively mild winters, we have less need for insulation than in many other parts of the country where it’s much colder and the temperature fluctuates greatly. As a result, we are rated as belonging to Zone 2 and Zone 3 in the insulation guide map.

How Does TAP® Insulation Get Installed?

As a homeowner, anytime you get work done on your house, you want to know what to expect. How long will it take? (About three to five hours.) Can you leave while it’s happening or do you have to stay? (You don’t have to stay – you’re free to leave!) Will parts of your home be inaccessible? (No, you’ll have access to your entire house.)

Our goal is to make your TAP Insulation installation as seamless, simple, and safe as it possibly can be. On the day of your installation, here’s what you can expect from us:

  • On-time arrival: We provide a clear arrival window and arrive on time, ready to begin work.
  • Stay or go: Feel free to run errands or go about your day. Our team can complete the installation without you needing to be present.
  • Meticulous site preparation: We start by preparing the area to protect your space and ensure a smooth installation. Our process includes installing soffit venting baffles, placing insulation rulers every 300 square feet, covering fixtures, sealing the attic from living areas, and laying a protective pathway through your home.
  • Advanced blown-in insulation: Our materials are ready to go and never prepared on-site, ensuring a swift, efficient installation. Cellulose insulation naturally finds every corner, guaranteeing complete, comprehensive coverage.
  • Precision installation: We never compress insulation behind pipes and conduits. This careful approach maintains optimal R-Value and prevents heat and noise transfer.
